Sedun + Kanerva Architects is a Toronto-based architecture firm located in the heart of the Queen + Broadview Village. The firm was established as a partnership more than forty years ago by Leonard Sedun and Seppo Kanerva, offering architectural design services within the Greater Toronto Area and throughout Ontario. Currently the firm balances institutional knowledge and experience with new design leadership and currency in the industry. A significant marker for our success as architect-of-record is the ongoing relationships we maintain with our consulting engineers, and the repeat commissions we work on with satisfied clients for a variety of renovations, additions, and new project construction.

Sedun + Kanerva has established a reputation for well-designed and successfully completed design programs for family or institutionally owned and operated Continuum of Care facilities, including Senior Citizen accommodations, Retirement Homes, and Nursing / Long-term Care facilities. Our team of architects and engineers have successfully completed more than 30 LTC projects, ranging in scale and size as renovations, additions, and new construction. The variety of design briefs, ministry mandates, site constraints, and budget challenges have provided us with opportunities to innovate and refine successful design strategies, and propose effective construction solutions, working effectively with each client from commission through to occupancy.

Seppo has retired from his role as principal in charge, but his influence is maintained with some staff who have worked on Sedun + Kanerva projects dating back almost 30 years. Under his leadership, the firm designed facilities satisfying two successive editions of the Nursing Homes Act, and later the Long-Term Care Home Design Manual, acutely aware of the requirements and how to create a comfortable home-like atmosphere for residents. Dementia had been of particular interest, as more and more seniors / residents suffer from it, and with this in mind, an innovative Dementia Wing was designed to mitigate the effect of common traits associated with dementia, and elements have been successfully included in the design approach taken on other Sedun + Kanerva projects.

Another effective tip to control construction dust is to hang plastic drop cloths known as zipwalls around the area of renovation. But excess of movement should be avoided as it allows the dust to potentially escape and settlement. Little preparation will land you with a much smoother, better and convenient house built perfect and completed on time.

The first decision is whether you would reside in the same house during renovation or temporarily shift out. If renovation is just for one place like bathroom or kitchen, its possible to remain staying there with a few adjustments. But if the entire house needs a renovation, it could stretch to a few months and its best to shift to any temporary abode like a rented apartment or a hotel. While remodeling, opt for materials with mass appeal like stainless steel appliances of high quality rather than the professional-grades ones.
